Premium goose down is among the most refined, high-performing cold-resistant materials nature has to offer, covering the chests of ducks and geese. Unlike feathers, which are stiffer and heavier, down clusters are lightweight, fluffy, and rich in natural fibers. They provide maximum warmth with minimal weight, making them the most valuable part of the plumage. A single cluster weighs about 2 milligrams, requiring 300 to 500 clusters to create just 1 gram of down. The denser and larger the filaments, the better its thermoregulatory performance.

Quality in feathers and down is measured by fill power, which essentially indicates its lofting capability – how much warmth, weight, and compressibility it offers. The higher the fill power, the lighter and higher-quality the down. Most fill power scales run from 100 to 800, but exceptionally high-quality down may achieve 900 or even 1000 with special treatments.

Goose down naturally performs best in dry cold; it loses loft and insulation when wet. However, when combined with water-repellent and moisture-resistant materials; like those used in Sensation Seekers technical garments, it remains highly effective even in damp, cold conditions.
